In which situations can egg freezing be performed?
Just like embryos, eggs can also be frozen and stored, then thawed later to create embryos, and today this is successfully applied. Eggs collected and successfully preserved at younger ages almost stop time for women who wish to have children in later years; despite the passing years, the age of the egg remains as healthy as when it was first collected.
Our center has an experienced team and a laboratory equipped with the latest technologies for the proper freezing, storage, and thawing of eggs.
Who can undergo egg freezing?
- Before treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy that may damage oocyte cells.
- Before surgeries that may lead to the loss of reproductive function (such as removal of the ovaries).
- In cases of low ovarian reserve in women who have not yet given birth, or when there is a family history of early menopause documented by a medical board report signed by three specialist physicians, eggs may be frozen and stored.
What documents are required during the egg freezing process?
The person who wishes to freeze their eggs may begin the treatment process by applying to our center with their identification and a report obtained from a state or university hospital indicating that they are eligible for oocyte freezing.
How does the egg freezing process proceed?
The egg freezing process takes approximately 15 days in total. Treatment begins on the 2nd or 3rd day of the menstrual period. Thanks to hormone medications, more eggs than usual are produced.
When the eggs reach the desired size, a trigger injection is administered, and approximately 35–36 hours later, the eggs are collected vaginally.
The collected eggs are frozen in the laboratory using the vitrification technique without the formation of ice crystals, and later, when the patient wishes to become pregnant, the eggs are thawed and used.
How long can frozen eggs be stored?
A person who wishes to continue storing their frozen eggs must apply every year and submit a signed petition indicating that their consent continues. If the person no longer wishes the eggs to be stored, they must apply to the IVF center with a signed petition stating the reason for disposal. Afterwards, the health authority is notified, and the eggs are destroyed under the supervision of a commission.
Frozen eggs can be stored for a maximum of 5 years within the limits set by the relevant regulation. However, it has also been stated that this period may be extended if an application is submitted to the Ministry of Health.
